Update time!

Well let’s see, I was a mess at the Hopkins appointment last week. True to form, Sally beat us up there, so that when Frank pulled up to the drop-off, Sally had a wheelchair ready, had primed Ella Mae (my wonderful chemo nurse who is a total crack up – but SO dedicated) and I just wobbled in and up to oncology where I flopped into the bed and they took some blood (potassium is down, mom is feeding me sweet potatoes!) did the whole blood pressure thing (not great) but then I had a nice long nap as the IV pumped a few bags of hydration and some steroids (oh yeah) – I was told my cheeks pinked up nicely and finally I quit returning tummy contents! (There is a theory that the nausea is from STILL coming off the pain meds, and possibly not the chemo. We’ll see.)

Dr. Dan even made a bedside visit. (oh! Pray for Dr. Dan and the team…they make their big presentation on their very successful clinical trial next week) in the end, Dr. Dan had Ella Mae take me off all chemo, put me on 3 anti-nausea drugs that poor Frank had to administer every 3 hours….Andrew volunteered for the 2 a.m. dosing! Nice to have a nocturnal 21 yr old home for a few weeks! But the drugs kicked in after a few days and, that, along with a ½ steroid pill, now have me eating like a trooper.

My mom (Ruth) arrived from Cleveland last week to take charge of all cooking and over-mothering….and she is doing a great job of it! Those of you who know my mom, won’t be surprised that she insisted on driving alone (in her new car!) from Cleveland to DC. (Couldnn’t be here without her wheels!) As I remind Frank, who even HE is feeling overfed, cooking is my mom’s Love Language and she is loving all over us!

So, I am eating, gaining some weight, more tired than I would like to admit, but trying to save up energy for the WEDDING! Next week is the big week with all the festivities. We are having tons of rain back here, so may I ask you to please BOTH pray for a cure for cancer AND a nice sunny weekend next weekend for the wedding in our backyard at the shore.

I will post wedding pix, if you will indulge me. After the wedding, I go back up to Johns Hopkins to jump back into the fight. They are going to put me back on the same meds, so that means every 3 weeks I will go for an infusion of Oxaliplatin and then each day I will take morning/evening doses of Xeloda chemo pills. (I understand it’s a pretty common combo.)

I know I should be so happy that my stomach has calmed down from the every hour (3 hours max between bouts of vomiting..it was terrible!) but on the other hand, I feel as though I am “off meds” and what about that cancer???! I find that I am worried about it. So please pray that God has stopped the cells during this time of “no chemo pills.”

We got an email from Ella Mae who wants me back up at JH tomorrow morning “just so I can lay my eyes on ya…” So back up there we go tomorrow for some blood letting, and check over. I also have an appointment on Thursday before the wedding, so Ella Mae will have me all spiffed up for the weekend.

Thanks again for your prayers for the doctors, me, Frank, Andrew, Chip (flying in from Miramar on Thursday), Christine & Erik and Sally!

Love,
Carol

  1. Wishing you the continued best!!! Also praying for sunshine next weekend.... I KNOW how important that is!! I will be thinking of you all. I also read an interesting article on-line tonight about immunotherapy to treat cancer. It certainly sounded promising. I'm not sure if it's been successful with all types of cancer but recent studies against prostate cancer and melanoma were very promising (melanoma is quite aggressive and metastatic, so Ithought that was promising news to pass on!) Again, wishing you all the best in EVERYTHING!
    With Love and Prayers,
    Tami & Patrick

  2. Hi Carol et al: So happy to get your news tonight before I go to bed in CA.
I loved being with you Friday and was so happy that you could EAT. You certainly rallied after the week of horrors, and I pray that every day gets you stronger for the wonderful weekend ahead. I'm praying HARD for all of you! I send you so much love and will keep praying for you, Frank, the wedding lovebirds, Chip and Andrew! I know it will be a very special time for all. Hugs and kisses, June

  3. This is THE week....let the festivities begin! You know, weddings can be exhausting for folks not waging war with cancer and the effects of chemo Carol. Your short break from your regimen is really such a gift. Please try to not be anxious about not taking your chemo meds sweetie. Look at it this way -- this little respite is giving you a chance, not just to enjoy this precious wedding day, but to also allow your body to rejuvenate and nourish itself. We are praying that: You WILL be the glowing mother of the bride! :o) You WILL bask in the joy of feeling good that day! You WILL have the confidence that God is personally conquering those no-good cells wreaking havoc on your body -- so fear be gone! And the rain WILL depart and give way to a sunny and perfect day. We know that the Lord will be smiling and lavishing His love on each of you from beginning to end as you enter into this week of celebration and being together. It's going to be so special. So, celebrate with hopeful abandon my friend...God is SO incredibly wonderful and He's giving you a chance to lovingly catch your breath for a time. Enjoy the moments...love, Jeff and Jane

  8. Hi, Carol,
Just read through all the blogs and got caught up on your news. I'm late to this thing, but please count me in with those holding you and yours up in prayer. Your ordeal, and the courage and positive attitude you're displaying, have deeply touched my heart. I know you are blessed to have your loving mom there with you, doing what moms do best! And you will be a radiant mother-of-the-bride at the wedding, your very presence warm enough to banish any thought of clouds!

The wonderful thing about our faith is that we know He has us in His grip, regardless of circumstances. Besides those prayers requested for your treatment, healing, weight gain, wedding, and family (consider those in motion as I speak!), my prayer, too, will be that you continually find delight, comfort, and strength in those moment to moment encounters with our great God. Wish I could tell you in person, my friend!

    With love and blessings,
    Carolyn Arneson

  10. Hi there Carol & Frank,
Can't wait for the celebration to begin. We just had a beautiful wedding here in Philly and we're in the wedding mood (as long as it's not our daughters'). Glad to hear that you're eating a bit more. May God continue to bless you and your doctors. We'll pray for a beautiful day. See you soon.
    Love,
    H & K

  11. Hey Carol,
I've asked God to send some of that rain down here! Mostly, we're praying that our good God will infuse some JOY into your cheeks and some LAUGHTER into your ribs, to go along with the LOVE that He has sent to you through so many friends, nurses, and doctors. You ARE loved.

  13. Carol, et al,
I was soooo excited to see the weather report online for St.Michaels - sunshine on Sat. Yes, God is good. Will pray that the weather report stays the same!!! Am so excited to see you all.
This morning in Bible Study, 23 women prayed for you, your strength, and your family with heartfelt concern. More like "crying out to the Lord" for you all. Know you are in their hearts and prayers. They are amazing prayer warriors!! So glad to hear you can eat. That nutrition is so important for your healing, I would think. Sounds like all are really taking great care of you!! I Praise the Lord for each one. Consider yourself hugged and will deliver a real one soon!
    Love,
    Carrie and Larry

  14. Dear Carol,
Am so pleased that the nausea is abating nd that we are still here praying in our Emmaus groups and at St. Matthews - we aren't stopping until you get a clean bill of health!!

Enjoy these days ahead with Christine and Erik as they head out on the same journey that you and Frank have and may they have the same joy and love that you and Frank share. The phrase "in sickness and in health" will have a more profound meaning for this young couple and you and Frank are role models of dignity, dedication and faith for them.

Much love to all as you celebrate on Saturday!!

    Love,
    Lynne and Jerry

  16. Carol:
I have been reading and praying daily but wanted to send you a note to let you know that so many of us will be thinking and praying for you, your family, and Christine and Erik on their very special wedding day. God is so good to take care of the problems you were experiencing right when you needed a little reprieve. We are planning on nothing less than sunshine on that day and hoping that you feel each and every outstretched arm that is holding you up in prayer.
    Love and hugs,
    Debbie Handlos

  19. Dear sweet Carol,

We're praying along with everyone else that the wedding festivities will be a joyous celebration for all of you!

And also that God will fill you and your sweet family deep inside with the assurance that He is in control of everything that touches our lives (even during chemo breaks) and that He loves us more than we can ever imagine - and when we put those two things together...there is peace and trust and rest.

    In His love-
    Bernice (and Dave)

  20. Dear Carol,
I am glad that the food is staying down. So many of the cancer patients I visit each week complain about that side effect.

Have a wonderful, magical family celebration this weekend. This is a special time so save up that energy so you can enjoy every minute. God will allow you this short break from your meds. He is watching over you and with that you need nothing more.

My prayers are always for you. Tony leaves this up to me. We both hope you and Frank take this time to just enjoy family, friends and celebration.

    God's Blessing and our love,
    Tony and Joanne
