The Slow Journey Home

Carol continues to rest peacefully . . . and more deeply each day . . . as she makes her journey home. The family keeps vigil and waits.

We do read your blog messages to Carol. The hospice nurses tell us she can hear them. So thank you for all the wonderful notes you post and the love and prayers you send!

Love,
Sally

  3. My dear Carol,
Daily I have read of your journey. You have been such an influence in my life. You were my Core Leader in CBS at a very low time in my life. Your sweet phone calls and emails kept me focused and helped me forge how I would handle some life changing news. Your ministry was a strong one and you will be very much missed.

When my mother went through a similar journey last year, I sat by her hospice bedside and read scripture to her. Here is one that was a favorite:

    Psalms 103

    Praise the Lord, O my soul;
all my inmost being, praise his holy name.
Praise the Lord, O my soul,
and forget not all his benefits --
    who forgives all your sins
    AND HEALS ALL YOUR DISEASES,
who redeems your life from the pit
and crowns you with love and compassion,
who satisfies your desires with good things
so that your youth is renewed like the eagle's.

The Lord is compassionate and gracious
slow to anger, abounding in love.

as far as the east is from the west,
so far has he removed our transgressions from us.

for he knows how we are formed,
he remembers that we are dust.

the wind blows over it and it is gone,
and its place remembers it no more.
    But from everlasting to everlasting
the Lord's love is with those who fear him,
and his righteousness with their children's children.

You have left a legacy dear Carol. We will say, she is gone, but Christ will say, she is HOME!!!

    Yours,
    Betsy

  6. Oh sweet friend,
You are a treasure and I wanted to thank you for your prayers for Ryan. Good news is that he is on some new medicine that is helping him to focus and he is doing very well in school and feels good about himself. The nurses say that you can hear what they read so I wanted you to know how much I have appreciated your prayers and concern. I am praying for you and your family. Love, Donna

  14. Dear Carol-
From the first moment you moved to Cripplegate, I knew there was something special about you. You exuded this light of life. I was later to learn it was love for your Savior. You exhibited that in everything you did. From letting the O'Dell's traipse all over your house, to welcoming anyone in for a drink, to winter wonderland talks, to outlandish DC tours.
You have always felt like home.
And you have made that wherever you have gone.
I am so thankful for the chance to know you.
You have forever imprinted on my heart.
    I love you.

  17. Carol,

Our memories of you span many cities and many different stages of life on this earth. You've taught us both how to know the Lord better. You taught Jenny how to be a woman of God when she didn't have a clue. You taught Matt how to bring faith into business without compromising excellence in either. In all our memories of you, what's consistent is your unwavering solidarity with the Gospel of Jesus Christ and your contagious energy that so easily drew others to you.

In his book "Don't Waste Your Life," John Piper writes, "God created us to live with a single passion to joyfully display His supreme excellence in all the spheres of life." Rest confidently that you have done just that. We love you.

It is an honor for us to daily join with others in prayer for you and your family. While we await the outcome, which with all of our hearts we'd love to be a miraculous cure, we are so grateful for the myriad of ways you've impacted our lives for good. We are better people because of your amazing faith in Christ. Carol, if the Lord chooses to heal you through death, we thank God we will see you again. And since Christ could come back at any minute and would be bringing with Him all those who have "died in Christ," our reunion with you could be any day now. We'd like that a lot.

  33. Our precious Carol,

Not so long ago, as we watched with awe while you fought this mysterious cancer with amazing grace, we were confidently agreeing that God was working a miracle through your overwhelming circumstances. Reflecting back on Christine and Erik's wedding day, it was obvious that God did just that -- created a miraculous recovery for you so that you could feel good, look gorgeous and enjoy your day with everyone. What a gift that was! God even took care of the rain and gave you sunshine instead. We just smile thinking back on that day for you. Memories to cherish and gratitude all around. God loves you so, Carol.

And now dear friend, as you reach out to grasp the ultimate miracle that our Lord has waiting for you -- walking side by side with Him in Heaven's beauty, surrounded by things that are unspeakably breathtaking, we continue praying for you and for those surrounding you. God is still creating glory for the Kingdom through you Carol and we are blessed to be a part of seeing you through these steps that remain until you greet the King!

We are so proud of you and so glad to call you our friend for all these years. Nothing can separate us from the Love of Jesus -- nothing from this earth and nothing from things beyond this earth. You belong to Him and He cannot wait to welcome you home.

We will hug you and love on you when we see you again beyond the veil. How glorious that will be -- and such a reunion! Honestly Carol, we can't wait to be in His presence together with all of our brothers and sisters in Christ. What a day that will be!

Rest, knowing that the best is yet to come -- beyond your imagination. We love you and love your family forever. Thank you for loving us back, Jeff and Jane

  37. Carol,

I mentioned this a while ago to you, but it’s worth repeating now -- for every person who posts to this blog, there are so many more who read, agree, and continue to pray for you and your family every day.

If you could hear the conversations that are taking place, you would know something about the impact you’ve had in this world. So many others have already reminded you of your amazing ability to be a friend and the extraordinary family that you have raised. But you should also know that you’ve done something big in the business world. You inspired business executives to be better leaders. Many thousands of employees in companies pay attention to their own moral compasses because you raised up a generation of ethics officers who reinforce that idea. And none of us in the ethics field will ever look at Dilbert the same way, because you believed that talking about ethics should be fun.

Most of all, your passion for truth and ethics has been planted in so many people throughout the business world. You made a difference, Carol…you achieved your kingdom purpose.

It won’t be quite the same trying to navigate the ethics industry without you, but I certainly have some great “Carol Marshall” pearls of wisdom that I will remember along the way. I -- along with so many other people -- am going to miss you terribly.

Yet as sad as I am for the rest of us, I’m excited for what God has in store for you now. You have held fast to God’s promises; may you now see them all realized.

Please know that you are so deeply loved. It has been a privilege to be your friend.

  41. Dear Carol,

In Kasisi Childrens home outside Lusaka is a most beautiful and simple chapel. It is where my son grew up. The interior is painted the blue of a crisp morning sky. The Sisters wear habits of the same color. When praying in this place, you can hear the music of children laughing, as the older Sisters sing their prayers.

At this chapel, the children of Kasisi celebrated a Mass for you. They danced and sang, swaying in a magical way that seems to speak of God's original joy for man.

God speed, good friend. We will see you shortly.

    Warmest,

You know that Ed and I have always thought of you as the sister we never had. Our thoughts are with you, Frank, Chip, Andrew, Christine and Erik, Ruth, and Barb and Wayne constantly. Here is today's Google scripture gadget, for all of us:
Pro. 3:5-6 Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.

That is a message from scripture and a message that you taught us. We love you.

You are such a positive, glass full to the brim person and such a testiment to God and a faithful life. I treasure all of our times we have had together, even the worriesome night of the Las Flores fire-you were my rock!! Your face lights up any room.
